La demenza è una malattia neurodegenerativa cronica, progressiva ed in definitiva fatale.
La demenza avanzata è caratterizzata da un deficit cognitivo assoluto, dall’incapacità di comunicare verbalmente e da una totale dipendenza funzionale. L’assistenza abituale delle persone affette da demenza avanzata non è universalmente sostenuta da un approccio palliativo.
Le cure palliative si sono concentrate, tradizionalmente, sulla cura dei pazienti oncologici, ma da più di un decennio si è estesa la richiesta, in tutto il mondo, per l’estensione dei servizi di cure palliative a tutte le persone con malattie che minano la sopravvivenza e che hanno bisogno di cure specialistiche, tra cui le persone affette da demenza.
Per valutare l'effetto degli interventi di cure palliative nella demenza avanzata e informare in merito alla gamma delle misurazioni degli esiti utilizzate, il 4 febbraio 2016 è stato consultato ALOIS, il Cochrane Dementia and Cognitive Improvement Group's Specialized Register. ALOIS contiene i rapporti degli studi clinici individuati dalle ricerche mensili delle più importanti banche dati sanitarie, i registri delle sperimentazioni e le fonti bibliografiche grigie. Si sono svolte ricerche supplementari su MEDLINE (OvidSP), Embase (OvidSP), PsycINFO (OvidSP), CINAHL (EBSCOhost), LILACS (BIREME), Web of Science Core Collection (ISI Web of Science), il sito ClinicalTrials.gov e il portale delle sperimentazioni World Health Organization ICTRP per garantire che le ricerche fossero il più possibile complete e aggiornate.
